  Electrical scientist. Stroud weaver's son. Left for London in 1737 and ran a school. Conducted valuable experiments in electricity and magnetism. Inventor of electricity-measuring instrument. (FRS 1749).

William Cowle
died 1899

  Property owner and philanthropist. Bought lower part of Field estate in 1873. Laid out Park Road. Bequest led to foundation of Stroud Museum.

Paul Hawkins Fisher

Author of Notes and Recollections of Stroud (1871, 2nd ed. 1891, repr. 1986). Stroud solicitor. Lived in the Castle.
