Strap dress CU1930822dress

This dress is extremely rare and unusual.  It incorporates Plains-style beadwork techniques and motifs (lazy-stitch horizontal stripes and circular medallions) in a Great Lakes-style of dress.  Originally, it would have had detachable sleeves.  This garment clearly shows the decorative use of the selvedge or saved list.

The dress was collected on a reserve in Saskatchewan, Canada in 1929, probably in the File Hills area.  Most people on the four reserves that make up the File Hills are of Plains Cree heritage.
