300 Years Ago Maintenance Turnpikes Act of Parliament A Royal Visit Map of 1800 19th Century Charges The Impact of an Improved Road Network

In 1726, an Act of Parliament set up a Turnpike Trust to build or improve several roads in Gloucestershire, including the road from Gloucester to Stroud. The Gloucestershire Trust had almost 200 Trustees.

Paying to use roads which had formerly been free was not always popular with local people. Sometimes, turnpike gates were attacked and destroyed - as happened on the turnpike road at Cainscross in 1734.
