Brewer. Bought Stratford House in 1819. Sole proprietor of Stroud brewery in 1826. Accused of being Stroud's political boss, acting in the interests of Berkeley family.

Merchant & landowner. Acquired manor of Upper Lypiatt (included Stroud) to settle debt of £500 in 1395. Became Lord of the Manor, though probably never visited Stroud. On his death his estate was bequeathed to brother Robert. Whittingtons held the manor until about 1500.
