For families who were not destitute there were schools in Stroud which could offer a traditional education. The earliest school recorded is the Red Boys School founded in the Town Hall in 1642, by Thomas Webb, a Stroud clothier.

Webb left his house by the churchyard with additional funds to be used "by 2 honest widows..to breed up four poor children..." They became known as the Red Boys because they wore clothes made from the Stroud Scarlet broadcloth.
