Between 1764 and 1833, there were a number of significant friendly societies which were formed for the welfare of a specific group of workers. The Society of Cloth workers (1764) and the Society of Woollen Cloth Weavers (1816), were both formed for local employees.
In 1875, George Holloway, whose clothing business was the largest employer in the town, started the Mid Gloucestershire Working Men's Benefit Society, which by 1888, had 3,500 members. From January 2016, this website is managed by Stroud Local History Society |
